Peeter I Neeffs specialised in architectural depictions, especially the interiors of churches. Neeffs probably worked as an apprentice to Henry I of Steenwijk, who painted fantastic church interiors and palaces. In 1609 Neeffs became a member of St Luke’s Guild in Antwerp. The Salvation of St Peter is an example of architectural painting with a biblical scene. The figures are by Frans Francken III (Antwerp 1607 - Antwerp 1667). The work is signed and dated on the column in the centre. The legend of Peter’s salvation was very popular in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. It was seen as a premonition of the salvation of the popes in Rome as they repeatedly sought refuge there whenever Rome was under siege. Moreover the subjects gave the artists a fine opportunity to introduce chiaroscuro effects into their work.
