With this painting, Dillens won first prize in the genre painting competition of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, 1832; Salon of Ghent, 1832, nos. 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 or 32. He exhibited anonymously. The Salon catalogue of 1832 mentions: Leçon de morale sur une fleur (Un aimable veillard, assis dans un fauteuil, tient une fleur à la main, sur laquelle il paraît faire une leçon de morale à deux jeunes demoiselles, qui se trouvent devant lui, et qui sourient doucement, sans faire grande attention à la leçon du moraliste. Le lieu est un appartement ou un jardin, au choix de l’Artiste).
