De Noter won first prize with this painting in the cityscapes competition of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, 1820; Salon of Ghent, 1820, no. 187. He exhibited it anonymously with the motto: Un compas ouvert. Since 1932, this work has been on loan to STAM, Ghent, inv. 698.
