During the massacre at Vassy in 1562, Duke François de Guise and his troops murdered a group of Huguenots attending a religious service in a building. In the background left, the Cardinal of Lorraine can be seen looking on, leaning on a wall. The Vassy Massacre (French: massacre de Wassy) took place on 1 March 1562 and is considered the first major event in the French Wars of Religion. The series of battles that followed culminated in the signing of the Peace of Amboise (or Pacification Treaty of Amboise) the following year, on 19 March 1563.
