Catherine de' Medici (French: Catherine de Médicis) (Florence 1519 -Blois 1589) was queen of France from 1547 to 1559. She was a daughter of Lorenzo II de' Medici, ruler of Florence, who in turn was a cousin of Pope Leo X. She married the equally aged Henry II of France, second son of Francis I, who succeeded his father in 1547, in October 1533 at the age of 14.
