A winged greybeard with crutches, the personification of Time (Tempus), sits on a sea chariot. At his feet is an hourglass, one of his attributes, indicating the passage of time. His chariot is pulled by deer and has the dials of a clock as wheels. Time is accompanied by the four seasons. The buildings in the background are dilapidated ruins. An obelisk, in honour of an illustrious figure, has fallen from its pedestal. Thus Time overcomes Fame.
