This print is a faithful reproduction of a painting by Tintoretto that was part of a series of four paintings made in 1576 for the Atrium of the Doge's Palace in Venice. Agostino Carracci reproduced two of these canvases: the version with Minerva expelling Mars and the one with Mercury and the Three Graces (DeGrazia Bohlin 1979, p. 258 no. 148) mentions four states: I) with the engraver's monogram, followed by the date "1589" and the inventor's name; II) the date has been sanded off; the inventor's name has been rewritten with smaller letters; the commentary has been added; III) the inscription: "Valegio et Doino forma Venetia" has been added; IV) the printer's address has been sanded off; by now the intaglio is very worn.
