Insel Verlag's 'Mappenwerk' was published in Leipzig in 1900 on an edition of 100 copies, accompanying the magazine Die Insel. It is a portfolio of 40 lithographs, etchings, woodcuts and facsimiles, printed on different types of paper. The folder contains 24 original prints by Anton Albers, Paul Baum, Pierre Bonnard, Frank Brangwyn, Eugène Delâtre, Maurice Denis, James Ensor, Ernst Moritz Geyger, Wilhelm Laage, Georges Lemmen, Max Liebermann, William Nicholson, Auguste Rodin, Max Arthur Stremel, Hans Thoma, Heinrich Vogeler, Edouard Vuillard, Emil Rudolf Weiss, Ybels and Ignacio Zuloaga. Also included are 16 facsimiles after works by old masters. The folder opens with a folio with the title page and list of works verso. The subsequent loose-leaf prints and reproductions are protected by an attached thin silk paper. Most sheets bear the publisher's stamp of Die Insel on verso.
