The Salon catalogue of 1802 imposes the following theme for the painting competition: Quintius Cincinatus retiré à la campagne où il vivoit du travail de ses mains, invité par le Sénat de Rome à venir prendre possession du Consulat, auquel il venoit d’être nommé par le Peuple, prend congé de sa femme & ses enfans, leur recommande le soin de son ménage & se rend, quoiqu’à regret, aux désirs du Senat & du Peuple Romain.
