The first edition of Charles Baudelaire's collection of poems Les Fleurs du Mal was published in 1857. For the second edition, Baudelaire appealed to the graphic artist Félix Bracquemond to design a frontispiece for the collection. However, Baudelaire disapproved of his friend's design and eventually preferred an etching by Félicien Rops.
