The pencil sketch of the painter and fellow townsman Willy Finch belongs to an extensive series of drawings that Ensor made around 1883 of his circle of family and friends. Ensor did not regard them as portrait studies; they are rather fragmented observations of his immediate surroundings. Willy Finch regularly appears in Ensor's study drawings, oil sketches and paintings during this period. The museum owns an oil sketch of Finch by Ensor, painted around the same time (inv. 1986-AH).
