The gouache was a means of expression in its own right for Ossip Zadkine. This village scene was most likely produced in Caylus, in the Tarn-et-Garonne, where the artist regularly stayed from 1921 in the company of his wife, Valentine Prax. Zadkine saw the village landscape from different perspectives and playfully superimposes the respective layouts. Such gouaches were repeatedly shown in Belgium throughout the 1920s. Patrons such as André De Ridder, Walter Schwarzenberg and Paul-Gustave Van Hecke exhibited his work in their galleries and emphasised the artist’s creations in their publications.
