This drawing comes from the old collection of the Brussels lawyer, politician and writer Edmond Picard. It is one of the seven illustrations Redon drew for 'Le juré' by Picard, which was published with lithographs after these drawings. There are only two other drawings known that have been associated with these lithographs. One is in the Woodner collection in New York, the other in the Print Room of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
