In 1887 and 1888, James Ensor etched some harbour views in Nieuwpoort, but especially near the harbour channel in Ostend. Like the etched landscapes, they are studies of light, in this case on boats and sloops. The Ostend harbour inspired Ensor to paint two of his most accomplished graphic compositions: the Whistlerian " The Main Dock, Ostend" and "Boats Aground" (inv. 1998-B-45 and 49, respectively).
