Around 1930 Ensor, in the company of his friend Albert Croquez, witnessed the procession of Godelieve in Gistel. The artist elaborated the colourful procession into a painting in 1932, and two years later he etched the same scene in drypoint. Although the print is artistically and technically one of Ensor's least successful etchings, its great rarity should be emphasised.
