Ensor repeatedly used popular life in Ostend as the subject of paintings, drawings and etchings. This print probably goes back to a drawing Ensor made in the early 1880s. The theme also intrigued Willy Finch, Ensor's childhood friend from Ostend, in this period. The second state of this print was published in 1910 in the album of the Antwerp artist association L'Art contemporain.
