Gustave De Smet often produces a well-reasoned art in which the structural composition prevails over the impulsive element. But at the end of the 1930s his drawing became more vague, agitated and sketchy. In a 1940 interview, he spoke about this newly-acquired freedom: ‘I am more independent of the motif now, and I can concentrate more fully on my passion for colour: painting for the sake of painting itself.’ This landscape, with its intense and spontaneous brushwork and sharp contrasts of light and dark is a striking example of his work in that period.
