Around 1910, the German artist Christian Rohlfs evolved towards expressionism. During the First World War he began to concentrate more and more on watercolours. For religious themes such as Moses beholds the Promised Land (room B), Rohlfs used primarily oil or tempera on canvas. For simple subjects such as flowers or street scenes, he preferred watercolour. From his studio in Hagen he made numerous sketches of passers-by, capturing images of soldiers returning from the front and of the impoverished population. A sketch like Poverty is more than a fleeting impression and shows Rohlf's commitment to the misery of the people.
