In the figure of Christ, Ensor found a symbol of innocence, persecuted truth and of subjected goodness to the attacks of a hostile mass. For the artist, the drawing was also an occasion to express his own conflictive relationship with society. From the series "The Aureoles of Christ", to which this drawing belongs, the Christ theme remains very important in Ensor's work and in some works it is clear that he identifies himself with the figure of Christ. The interest in the figure of Christ is in itself not exceptional in this period. Like many of his contemporaries, Ensor was fascinated by the figure of Christ as a revolutionary or as an anarchist.
