Fosset is a small village in the Ardennes where Fernand Khnopff’s parents had a holiday home, and where the artist had since childhood spent many summers. Between 1880 and the mid-1890s Khnopff painted around 40 landscapes at Fosset. The presentation of the landscape is interwoven with his memories and perceptions. The result is a vague reality that is barely discernible. His landscapes are not imitations of nature, but rather interpretations of it. The artist did not wish to reproduce what he saw, but projected his own mood, isolation and melancholy into the landscape.
