Besides a series of self-portraits, Léon Spilliaert realised a remarkable ensemble of interior views during the years 1907-1908. These works feature objects that the artist also incorporated into his self-portraits. Two November (Interior) from 1908 goes back to a self-portrait from the same year (private collection). On both works, the calendar on the wall indicates the number two, suggesting that they were apparently painted almost simultaneously. The stern, chilly interior of Two November exudes a hushed atmosphere that could be associated with All Souls' Day. Spilliaert applied a mirror to the work, a motif the artist often used, symbolising self-observation.
