The abstract movement in Belgium arose in Antwerp and Brussels during the First World War. During these years a group of abstract artists were at work in Brussels, including René Magritte et Pierre-Louis Flouquet. From 1921 onwards, Victor Servranckx was part of this group and remained true to his views on visual art during the rest of his life. He was undoubtedly the most interesting member of the abstract tendency in Belgium. Some of his work is based on stylised elements from industry and mechanics, as is the case here, in Harbour – Opus 2, but it is usually entirely abstract.
