Joseph Paelinck painted Eros with the innocent smile of a shy boy, who poses for the painting with bow, quiver and wings. Bow and arrow are the typical attributes of the god of love. A shoulder strap decorated with butterflies, a symbol of frivolity and unsteady love, hides his sex. A classical landscape serves as the backdrop. Eros, in a graceful, seemingly unsuspecting pose, has neither the divine aura of the antique pictures nor the frank sensuality that we find in 18th century representations.
