After returning to the Netherlands, Savery continued to paint mannered, fantasy landscapes. To create depth, he often divided his paintings into three consecutive bands: an earthy foreground with trees, a central vista, and a blue background. The more elevated parts of the riverbank act as coulisses and therefore enforce the effect of depth. In the centre of the composition, an ibis attacks an ostrich, which is surrounded by two swans, a pelican, a rooster and a goose. While the atmosphere to the left is troubled, the right hand side, where the deer stand watching, exudes serenity.
