Small Injured Figure is the first example in George Minne's oeuvre of a lone nude youth with spread legs. There are two different types of this motif that differ little from each other, each executed in different materials: plaster, marble and bronze. The first version dates from 1889, the second from 1898. The complex pose of the arms suggests great physical and psychological tension. The wound that the boy touches on his upper arm seems to be a pretext to fold back on himself, to hide himself. We recognise in this a form of narcissism, but also a need to turn away from the outside world, a typical attitude that also recurs in Minne's other work, culminating in The Fountain with Kneeling Youths (1982-E).
