Louis Artan was the quintessential painter of the North Sea. Just like his contemporary Hippolyte Boulenger, he preferred to put dramatic effects in his landscapes, painted to or even in extreme weather conditions. On the beach of De Panne, he had a stilt house built that served as his studio. Artan painted in a rich paint material, with a suggestive and sketchy touch. With this direct and virtuoso technique, he wanted to express the changing moods of the sea.
