The painter, sculptor and graphic artist Jules Pierre van Biesbroeck was a socially committed artist who made a concrete contribution to the cultural project of the Ghent socialist party. His works are often compared to those of the Brussels artist Constantin Meunier. In Factory Worker and her Child, Van Biesbroeck portrayed a flaxen worker. We can see that from the attributes she carries: a hammer, a knife and a hook. Hands, arms and face are scarred by hard work. Mother and daughter are cast in one closed block. In this way the artist accentuates the inextricable connection in their dismal situation.
