George Minne and Constantin Meunier were the first immediate models for the Ghent sculptor and engraver Jozef Cantré. From 1918 to 1930 he remained in the Netherlands (Blaricum and Oosterwijk). Here he worked in ‘taille directe’, directly in wood and stone, in a constructivist expressionistic style that shows the influence of Zadkine. In 1930 Cantré returned to Belgium and settled down close to Ghent. Under the influence of the general neo-Realistic trend of the years before World War II, Cantré developed towards a synthesis between geometric simplification and realism. Combative Woman is a notable example where the artist succeeds in joining the rigidity of a reasoned geometrical construction with the expression of vitality and movement.
