Together with the painting The Entrance to Saint Elizabeth’s Church in Ghent (inv. 1922-AG), the drawing forms part of a series of preparatory pencil sketches for a canvas, painted to commemorate the marriage of Mr de Gellinck de Walle to Miss de Hemptinne.
