Painters and writers were attracted by the subdued character of Flemish towns. Albert Baertsoen was the leading painter of Ghent townscapes. He sketched a melancholic image of its canals, monuments, industry and poor neighbourhoods. Thawsetting in at Ghent is a good example of his restrained style: a dark and sober palette, an impasto technique and carefully worked-out composition. This painting shows a view of the Quai aux Tilleuls, seen from Baertsoen’s home on the corner of the Coupure. The canvas is unfinished: the grid of straight lines intended to transfer the composition from the preparatory drawing is still visible.
