The first major World Fair "The Great Exhibition" was held in London at the Crystal Palace in 1851. After Dublin, New York and Paris, it was London's turn again to host a World Fair in 1862, this time in South Kensington on the site where the Natural History Museum is today. This prize medal was the official reward for the various exhibitors and judges. This medal was received by Mr Duhayon-Brunfaut as a juror. On the obverse is the allegorical representation of Brittania sitting on a throne surrounded by six women with various attributes representing the arts, designed by Irish artist Daniel Maclise.
