Théodore Fourmois was one of the first painters in Belgium to oppose academic landscape painting. His aim was to fully integrate man and animals into the landscape and he attached great importance to painting in and on the basis of nature. Although his work is inspired by nature, it is also based on fantasy. This artist is therefore still a romantic painter, but his direct approach to nature makes him one of the pioneers of 19th-century Belgian landscape painting. The monumental trees in Landscape in the Dauphiné are very reminiscent of the work of 17th-century Dutch landscape painters.
