As a beginning plein air painter, Théo van Rysselberghe painted on the Belgian coast and sporadically in the Kempen. He painted this work in the summer of 1882, shortly before his first trip to Morocco. The painting has a sombre palette of predominantly grey tones. The composition is simply constructed in four parallel horizontal bands, alternating between dark and light. "Pool in the Kempen" is a striking illustration of Van Rysselberghe's landscape painting from that period, in which attention to the subtle reproduction of atmosphere prevailed.
