The painting depicts a dead partridge hanging inside a marbled alcove. At the base of the picture are three birds: two finches and what is possibly a siskin (a type of small songbird). A hidden light source illuminates the poultry in a theatrical manner, and accentuates the fan-shaped wing of the partridge. This scene is viewed as a hunting still life, because the poultry represents the spoils of a hunt in the wild. The painting is executed on copper, which has greater longevity than wood or linen as a support, and also creates a glossy surface effect.
