In 1846 Eugène Fromentin travelled to Algeria for the very first time. During this voyage and many later trips he kept a diary and created several paintings, studies and drawings there. These impressions teach us that the painter is a refined Orientalist, who specializes in landscapes, hunting scenes and scenes from North-African life. Works such as The Lion Hunt and Moroccan Horseman at the foot of the Chiffa rock bear witness to the artist’s marked interest in the power of nature. They are characterized by a vibrating light and a subtle colour palette, which lend considerable expressiveness to the whole tableau.
