Like the Impressionists, Ettore Tito painted in the open air. He captured the clear light of the mountains and the diffuse light of the Venetian lagoons in numerous canvases, but at the same time he was notably accurate in rendering forms and plied his brush forcefully. All this is to be seen in this painting. The virtuosity with which he visualises the movement of the horse as it goes uphill demonstrates his gifts as an animal painter.
