A wide array of fruits is displayed upon a table. On the Delft Blue dish, one can see a Mirabelle, a mandarin and a half-peeled lemon. The latter was an expensive import, and therefore a luxury item. Behind this, stands a tazza: a bowl on stand, usually made of precious metal, and intended to hold wine, sweets or fruits. Plums and grapes rest on the top, while apricots, a quince, cherries, peaches and grapes are arranged in a basket. A ladybird crawls across the grape leaves, and a caterpillar or centipede creeps along a twig above the leaves in the niche. To the right of the hanging grapes, an admiral butterfly alights on the wall of the alcove, an insect that is attracted to rotting fruit.
