On the occasion of the 1910 World Fair in Brussels, a large "Salon International de la Médaille Contemporaine" was held. The "Société Royale de Numismatique" and the "Société Hollandaise-Belge des Amis de la Médaille" jointly organised a Numismatic Congress there. There were two sections, one devoted to numismatics in general, the other exclusively to art and medallion technology at the time. The participants of this congress could also register for this commemorative medal. Designed by Jules Jourdain, the medal depicts on the obverse an archaeological dig in which a man finds a number of coins in the earth. A woman looks at a coin she is holding in her hands. The reverse of the medal depicts the medallist at work, standing in front of his easel.
