French medallist Jules-Clément Chaplain engraved a series of medals depicting a number of famous people. This medal with the bust of Marshal Patrice de Mac Mahon is the first in the series. Marquis de Mac Mahon was a French officer and politician. He distinguished himself especially in the Crimean War. In 1870, he was captured in the battle of Sedan and released back in 1871. Two years later, he was elected president by royalist parties. When these parties lost the majority, he resigned in 1879.
