Franz Seraph von Lembach was born in Schrobenhausen in 1836 as the son of a architect. Only after his father's death was he able to devote himself to painting. He eventually ended up in Munich and stayed there until his death in 1904. The engraver of this plaque, Henri Kautsch, was commissioned by his hometown Schrobenhausen to design a plaque on the occasion of von Lenbach's honorary citizenship. The front shows the artist's bust with glasses and beard. He is dressed in a coat with fur collar on which the badge of honour is clearly visible. The reverse (inv. 1911-CF-2) shows a panorama of the town of Schrobenhausen, with a woman holding a painter's palette and brushes in the foreground. Front and reverse of the plaque were made separately so that both could be exhibited at the Salon of the Medal during the 1910 World Fair in Brussels.
