This medal was given as a reward to students of the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. The student's discipline, year and name were engraved on the reverse in the places provided. These medals were not struck in the Netherlands but at the Monnaie de Paris. This illustrates the great fame the French mint enjoyed both at home and abroad. The medal depicts Minerva, patron goddess of painters and sculptors wearing her armour. She is braiding a laurel wreath and in front of her is a hammer and a painter's palette.
