David Axel Ericson was born in Sweden, but the family sought a better future in the United States. At the age of eleven, a leg was amputated following an illness and during his long convalescence, the boy painted very often. He was eventually able to study in the Art Student's League in New York and became a well-known artist who commuted between Europe and the United States. James-Earle Fraser has depicted his son on this plaque.
