In 1909 Geo Verbanck applied for the Rome Prize for sculpture. The commission read: "Orpheus, figure from the Greek doctrine of the gods, poet, divine singer, enchanted and charmed by the enchanting tones of his lyre, even the most insensitive beings. Verbanck won the Second Prize. Shortly afterwards the city of Ghent ordered this smaller wooden version from the artist.
