From 1860, Léon-Michel Gambetta worked as a lawyer in Paris. He became a member of the National Assembly in 1871 and president of the chamber in 1879. After a ballot box victory, he became prime minister of the so-called "grande ministère de la Republique" in 1881, which already resigned in 1882. In 1883, Oscar Roty was commissioned to design a medal for Gambetta showing the dates of his main achievements.
