Felix De Vigne belonged to a famous family of artists in Ghent. He not only painted portraits and historical works but was also an historian. Amongst other things he wrote a guide to medieval costume, which he illustrated himself. In A Baptism in Flanders in the 18th Century, De Vigne tried to go back to the past. The figures are dressed in keeping with eighteenth-century fashions. The family of the child that has just been baptised are members of the wealthy middle class. The artist has contrasted them with a group of homeless people on the left of the painting. The contrast between rich and poor is a recurring theme in nineteenth-century art. The detailed portrayal of the figures and their social world and the narrative element contribute towards the realism of the scene.
