The unidentified woman stands next to a child, and offers him an orange. Oranges were luxury goods, and the child’s dress and that of the woman, not to mention her diamond-studded earrings and gold brooch, reveal them to be wealthy. The infant wears a long skirt, which was customary for little boys.
