The Basque painter Ignacio Zuloaga spent much of his career in Paris. Like many artists of his generation, he painted the sophisticated life of the city, but equally sought the authenticity of rural life. Whereas such French contemporaries as Charles Cottet and Lucien Simon painted scenes of life in Brittany, Zuloaga depicted subjects involving the ordinary people of the Basque region and Northern Spain. This painting shows farming figures at a market probably somewhere near Segovia. Zuloaga portrayed them full-length in their traditional costume. This work is one of a series of figure portraits he worked on around 1900.
