Edouard Agneessens belonged to a generation of Belgian portrait painters who, around the middle of the nineteenth century, began to oppose academic art. With his work, he also became known outside Belgium, in Austria and in Tsarist Russia, among other places. Characteristic of his oeuvre is the spontaneous manner of painting and the natural simplicity in the composition and the poses of his figures. In the portrait of Diane Vernon, Agneessens' preference for a warm and harmonious colour is also apparent.
