From 1850 onwards César De Cock regularly visited France. Here he discovered the ‘plein air’ painting of the Barbizon School, which influenced him greatly. In fact De Cock befriended several of these painters. His work as a whole comprises mainly poetic spring landscapes painted in subdued colours. Landscape by the River Lys or The Road to the ‘Patijntje’ in Ghent from 1863 is a fine example of this. At the time the Patijntje was a popular rural inn on the outskirts of the town.
