Edouard De Vigne was a member of a prominent Ghent artist’s family. Paul de Vigne was its most important representative. De Vigne mainly enjoyed painting landscapes. This convent is in a remote location in a rugged mountain region in the Italian Apennine mountain range. The systematic composition, the subtle representation of details and the smooth paint surface all comply with the neo-Classicist rules while the warm light, the rich colour palette and the sensation of awe in regard to the grandness of nature point to a more Romantic approach to life.
